Immunology – Biology 348
Fall 2018
This Drew University immunology course is offered each year in the Fall semester.
Course Periods: MWF 11:50AM-12:55PM
Location: Hall of Sciences 105
Instructor: Dr. Brianne Barker
Prerequisite:
The prerequisite for this course is BIOL 250 lecture and lab. The core concepts from these courses that I want you to be familiar with include:
- The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, including DNA Replication, Transcription, Translation, DNA Repair, and Recombination
- Protein Structural Units and Amino Acids
- Mechanisms of Cell Communication and Signal Transduction
- Protein Transport and Sorting via the Biosynthetic/Secretory Pathway
- General molecular and cellular biology laboratory techniques including the use of a micropipette, aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, and polymerase chain reaction
- Analysis of experimental data
- Principles of good scientific writing, including appropriate citation of sources
Student Learning Goals:
After successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Summarize the essential aspects of the molecular and cellular processes by which immune cells develop and function
- Explain the mechanisms by which immune cells collaborate to allow for broad responses to pathogens without damaging the host
- Apply your knowledge of molecular and cellular immunology to discuss immune disease in humans and therapies that utilize the immune system
- Describe methods used to immune responses and interpret data obtained by these methods.
- Critically evaluate immunologic data and formulate new hypotheses
Textbook:
The textbook for this course is Kuby Immunology (8thEdition) by Punt et al., W.H. Freeman Press.
